Your Smart Home Shouldn't Be Google's Business Model

When you buy a smart thermostat, a smart speaker, or a smart camera from one of the big consumer tech companies, you are not just buying a device. You are agreeing to let that company learn your schedule: when you wake up, when you leave for work, who rings your doorbell, how warm you like the house at 7 p.m. on a Tuesday. That information rarely just sits there. For a lot of these companies, it is the actual product.

Here is how the math usually works. A smart speaker or camera gets sold near cost, sometimes at a loss, because the manufacturer is not counting on the sale to make the money back. They are counting on what happens after: the usage data feeding a recommendation engine, the voice queries building a profile, the video events getting logged and analyzed. Several major smart home and camera brands have publicly acknowledged sharing customer data and footage with third parties, including law enforcement, without always requiring a warrant or notifying the homeowner first. Once your home is wired into one of these ecosystems, your daily patterns become a data set that someone else owns and monetizes.

That is not how we build systems at RezSmart. Our platform does not run through a search engine account, a retail account, or an ad network. There is no free or discounted hardware subsidized by a data-harvesting business model on the back end, because we do not have one. You are the customer, not the product, and the equipment we install works the same way at 2 a.m. on a random Tuesday as it does on day one: quietly, locally, and without reporting your habits anywhere.

In practice, this means a few concrete things. Nobody is building an advertising profile out of when your lights turn on. Nobody is packaging up your camera footage and selling access to it. Nobody is tying your door lock to a corporate account that could change its terms of service, get acquired, or get breached in a way that has nothing to do with you and everything to do with a company you never chose to trust with this much information.

A smart home should make your life easier without turning your day-to-day habits into someone else's revenue stream. That is the idea behind how we do this: your home stays yours, in every sense of the word.
